A dream is a distorted substitute for the unconscious; in addition to the explicit dream, there is an unconscious latent dream, which manifests itself in the conscious mind as an explicit dream; the contents of the unconscious are displaced desires. A dream is a compromise between the need for a dream and unconscious displaced desires, a kind of hallucinatory fulfillment of desires. In our dreams our desires appear in altered forms, certain things appear not in their natural forms, but in symbols.
